Strong, wear-resistant threads in aluminium, magnesium and other soft or critical parts
Wire threaded inserts, also known as helical thread inserts or screw thread inserts (STI), are precision coils of stainless wire that create strong, wear-resistant internal threads. They are used by OEMs in aerospace, defence, automotive and electronics to strengthen threads in light alloys, and to repair stripped threads back to their original size.

Light alloys such as aluminium and magnesium save weight, but a thread tapped straight into them wears, galls and strips under repeated assembly. A wire threaded insert solves this by placing a hard, smooth stainless steel thread between the bolt and the parent metal. The coil spreads the load over a larger area, so the joint is stronger and the thread lasts for the life of the part.
We supply the tanged free-running type in Metric, UNC, UNF, BSP, BSW and BSF threads, in 1D to 3D lengths, in SS 304 and Nitronic 60. They are used across aerospace and defence, automotive and EV, electronics and industrial machinery, both in new production and to repair stripped threads without scrapping costly castings.
Wire threaded inserts are used to create strong, wear-resistant internal threads in soft or critical parent materials such as aluminium, magnesium, cast alloys and plastics, and to repair stripped or worn threads back to their original size. A precision stainless steel wire coil is wound into an STI-tapped hole, spreading the bolt load over a larger area and protecting the parent metal from wear and galling. OEMs in aerospace, defence, automotive, electronics and industrial machinery use them both in new production and for maintenance repair, because the repaired hole takes the same bolt size and no drawing change is needed.
Yes. Wire threaded insert, wire thread insert, helical thread insert, helical coil insert and screw thread insert (STI) are all names for the same product: a coil of diamond-profile stainless wire that forms a standard internal thread once installed. The STI name also gives its name to the special STI tap used to prepare the hole. Different industries and countries prefer different names, but the product, installation method and standards such as DIN 8140 for metric threads are the same.
Excel Trading Corporation supplies tanged free-running wire threaded inserts in Metric (coarse and fine pitch), UNC, UNF, BSP, BSW and BSF threads, in lengths of 1D, 1.5D, 2D, 2.5D and 3D, where D is the nominal thread diameter. Inserts are available in SS 304, the standard material for most applications, and Nitronic 60, a high-performance stainless steel chosen for galling resistance, wear resistance and elevated temperature in aerospace and defence work. Other materials, STI taps, installation tools and test certificates are available on request.
