Available Sizes

It is available in steel and stainless steel across three body diameters. The spherical mandrel head design requires a precise hole size — always drill to the exact diameter stated below for the mandrel to lock correctly inside the rivet body.

Body Diameter Hole Size (mm) Lengths (mm) Grip Range (mm) Materials
3.2 mm 3.3 – 3.4 7.0  ·  9.0  ·  11.0 1.0 – 7.0 Steel  ·  SS

What Is the HK-Lok High Strength Blind Rivet?

The HK-Lok is a high strength blind rivet engineered for structural and load-bearing applications where a standard open end rivet is not adequate. Its defining feature is the spherical rear mandrel head — when the mandrel is pulled during installation, this sphere forces the blind end of the rivet body to bulge outward into a tight, wide-diameter dome. The mandrel then locks in place inside this dome rather than being ejected, creating a completely rattle-free, sealed joint. The result is significantly higher shear and tensile strength than a standard blind rivet, excellent vibration resistance, and superior hole-filling performance — the rivet fills irregular or slightly oversized holes fully, leaving no play in the joint.

Material Options

Steel — Zinc Plated

Maximum Strength · Standard Grade

The highest shear and tensile values available in the HK-Lok range. Zinc plating provides adequate corrosion protection for indoor, sheltered and semi-exposed environments. The standard choice for truck chassis, vehicle bodywork, construction steel framing and any joint where structural load or vibration is a primary concern.

Best for: Truck building · Automotive · Construction · Coach work

Stainless Steel

300-Series · Corrosion Resistant

Full corrosion resistance for outdoor, coastal and high-humidity environments, combined with the HK-Lok's locked mandrel strength advantage. Slightly lower absolute shear values than steel but far superior long-term joint integrity in wet conditions. Suitable for outdoor structures, marine equipment and food-processing panels where both strength and durability matter.

Best for: Outdoor structures · Marine · Coastal · Food equipment

Installation Notes

  • Drill to the exact hole size — the spherical mandrel head must have precise engagement with the rivet body wall to lock correctly. Do not use an oversized hole.
  • A standard hand or pneumatic rivet gun is sufficient. The HK-Lok sets with a slightly higher pull force than a standard rivet — ensure your tool is rated for the 4.8 mm diameter if using that size.
  • The mandrel does not eject after setting — do not expect the stem to be released into your tool's collection chamber. This is normal and confirms correct locking.
  • For thin sheet applications, select the shortest rivet whose grip range covers your stack — this maximises the blind head diameter and clamping force on thin material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the HK-Lok stronger than a standard blind rivet?

A standard blind rivet ejects the mandrel after setting, leaving only the rivet body to carry load. The HK-Lok retains and locks the mandrel inside the rivet body — the spherical mandrel head mechanically interlocks with the bulged blind head. This means both the rivet body and the mandrel core share the load together, resulting in significantly higher shear and tensile values than a standard rivet of the same diameter and material.

Why does the mandrel not come out after setting an HK-Lok?

This is intentional and is the defining feature of the HK-Lok. The spherical head on the mandrel is larger than the rivet bore — as the mandrel is pulled through, this sphere forces the blind end to bulge around it and lock it in place. The mandrel cannot eject because the sphere is physically trapped inside the set rivet body. This is what delivers the rattle-free, high-strength joint.

Is the HK-Lok suitable for thin sheet metal?

Yes — thin sheet metal is one of its primary applications. The spherical mandrel forces the rivet body to fill the hole completely and form a wide, dense blind head even on thin material. This prevents the rivet from pulling through or spinning in the hole, which is a common failure mode of standard rivets in thin gauge steel or aluminium bodywork.

What is the difference between the HK-Lok and the HP-Lok?

Both are high strength locked mandrel blind rivets from the same family. The HK-Lok uses a spherical mandrel head and is designed for thin sheet metal and general high-strength applications. The HP-Lok is a heavier structural variant with a larger body diameter and higher absolute load capacity, designed for thick-section structural steel and heavy fabrication. If your application involves thin to medium sheet, the HK-Lok is the right choice; for heavy structural joints, the HP-Lok is preferred.
